An Arlington High School senior will be among 185 musicians nationwide to march in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band. Elizabeth Zwissler, Class of 2021, was recently selected to join musicians across the country to march in the 2021 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Due to COVID-19, there will be no marching bands in the parade this year, but Zwissler will join the internationally-recognized band for the 2021 parade by playing the mellophone. To be selected, Zwissler had to send in auditions tapes of her marching and playing the mellophone. Students were judged on technical proficiency, tone quality, marching ability and overall general musicianship.

“I hadn’t played the mellophone in a couple of years, so I honestly wasn’t sure of my chances,” Zwissler said. “My mom called me one morning and asked if I had checked my email. I checked it right away, and we both just started crying on the phone.”

Music, particularly marching band, has been a large part of what drives Zwissler. She’s intentionally held various positions during her high school career to broaden her knowledge and skill-level while on the field. She has played several instruments, marched in shows, led as drum major, and this year she’s expanding her talents to the color guard.

“I’ve always wanted to be the best in music,” she said. “I either want to be a middle or high school band director or have a career in music therapy, so being invited to play in a prestigious band in one of Thanksgiving’s biggest traditions is amazing."

The Macy’s Great American Band made its debut in 2006 and has appeared every year since, making them the only marching band besides the NYPD Marching Band to hold a permanent spot in the parade lineup. Zwissler will join 185 musicians and 40 flags and dancers for the 95th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in November 2021.
